Vaisakhi festival attractions

Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is an important festival celebrated in the Punjab region of India and by the Sikh community worldwide. It is celebrated on April 13 or 14 every year and marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year.

The festival commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth, the community of initiated Sikhs, by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru, in 1699. It is also a celebration of the spring harvest season.

On the day of Vaisakhi, Sikhs visit gurdwaras (Sikh temples) to offer prayers and participate in kirtans (devotional songs). The gurdwaras are decorated with flowers and special processions called nagar kirtans are held, with people singing hymns and carrying the Sikh flag, known as the Nishan Sahib.

One of the most important traditions associated with Vaisakhi is the Amrit Sanchar or the ceremony of initiation into the Khalsa Panth. This ceremony involves the preparation of amrit, a sweetened holy water that is stirred with a double-edged sword by five initiated Sikhs, known as the Panj Pyare. This amrit is then offered to those who wish to be initiated into the Khalsa Panth.

Vaisakhi is also a time for feasting and celebrating with family and friends. Traditional Punjabi dishes such as sarson ka saag and makki di roti are prepared, and people participate in bhangra and gidda, traditional folk dances of the region.
